INTERNeX New Zealand: Tropical Escape to Fiji

While NZ might be full of awesome things to do in winter, for those of us drawn to the heat, a tropical island escape may sound more appealing….

Fiji is an island country located in the South Pacific Ocean, around 4 hours away from New Zealand. It is made up of more than 330 islands – majority of which were formed through volcanic activity. Fiji has long been a popular holiday destinations for Kiwis and those travelling through NZ, with its beautiful beaches, hot weather, friendly local people, easy 3-hour plane journey, and the benefit of being in the same time zone as New Zealand.

We’ve put together a list of why a visit to Fiji should definitely be on your list of things to do during your time in the southern hemisphere:

  1. It’s close to NZ! Only 3 hours away. How often are you going to be this close to a beautiful south pacific tropical island?
  2. White sand beaches with hot weather all year round. Need we say more?
  3. The warm, welcoming nature of the Fijian locals. Fijian people are renowned for their incredibly friendly, welcoming nature.
  4. Snorkeling and Scuba diving. Fiji provides some of the world’s best snorkeling and scuba diving.
  5. Hiking – Fiji is home to some lush rainforest trails.

Skiing and Boarding in NZ

As the winter chill kicks in we can start to think about where to ski and ride this season. The season runs from July – September.

Although New Zealand does not have the massive mountains like they do in Europe and North America we still have some good hills and excellent Apres ski.

The South Island has the most fields and generally the best conditions, the most popular fields are near Queenstown (Coronet Peak and The Remarkables), Wanaka (Treble Cone and Cardrone) and Methven (Mount Hutt). However, there are many smaller club fields along the Southern Alps. Queenstown and Wanaka have excellent Apres ski with Queenstown perhaps one of the best party ski towns anywhere in the world.

In the North Island the two main fields are both on Mt Ruapehu (Whakpapapa, the largest field in New Zealand) and Turoa near ohakune which has a vibrant Apres Ski.

You need to drive up to the mountain each day and passes range from about $80 – $100 per day however, club fields are cheaper. Ohau and Porter heights are two of my favourite smaller fields.

It is best not to go to the mountains during the school holidays as accommodation is more expensive and there can be long queues for the lifts. (School holidays are 9th July – 24th July) and then again on 24th September.

We have Weekend packages available in the North Island and 4 or 7 night packages in the South Island.
