After 4 days travelling we had a day off in Taupo. A bunch of people headed off to the hiking track of Tongariro, where Mount Doom is. All the others were recovering from the night before. It was nice to have a proper day off. I just went with a group of people to the beach and just hang out for a while. The weather was really nice and just throw a ball. Lake Taupo is actually a big volcanic crater, so on the beach you see a lot of things that are from the volcano like the rocks and volcanic glass.
After the beach I went to a thermal park. I got passed Taupo Bungy
and they have an amazing spot to have a bungy. The Waikoto river is so beautiful. Close to the river you have a stream that is heated and you can sit in the pools over there. It was such a nice place to be. In the evening we were going for a drink. It was so sad to have to say goodbye to everyone. You meet so many nice people!
I hope you all enjoyed the blogs the last days about my Kiwi Experience trip. I think the trip was amazing! If you have any questions about travelling with Kiwi Experience send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and ask me!
We had to move on again. This day we are going in the direction of Taupo. We had to jump on the bus at 9.30am. In the morning you were able to do an activity. For example going to see the geysers and Kiwi birds in te puia and go zorbing at OGO. All the people who didn’t want to do an activity in the morning were going to Redwood forest for a short walk. There were enormous red trees and it was a beautiful short walk through the forest.
After we picked up the rest of the group at the activities we were going to Taupo. This day you had the opportunity to do a skydive. You can do a 15000ft or a 12000ft skydive in Taupo. A lot of people on the bus wanted to do that. When you are doing the skydive in Taupo, you have an amazing view over Lake Taupo and you will see Tongarario National Park with Mount Doom! The weather was really good and everyone loved it!
While some people were doing the skydive we had some spare time to just have a look around and enjoy. At 5pm I had to be in the harbour to jump on a sailboat, The Barbary. We were going with 20 people from the Kiwi bus on the boat and we had a really good time. The captains most important rule was having fun. We had a lot of fun, eating pizza, steering the boat, watching old carvings of Maori and see Mount Doom at the other side of the lake. It was definitely worth it!
Because this is our first place where we have 2 overnight stops, we could have fun in the evening and play some games in the bar and have fun with the people you have met during the trip!
The 3rd day we had to move on in the direction to Rotorua. We had to leave at 8.30am and our first stop was in Ruakuri Forest. We had a short walk there through the forest where you walking next to river that is passing through the mountains. On some places you have to get in the caves to stay on the track. You can get in to the caves and make nice pictures! After we did the walk we had to move on to Rotorua!
When we were heading to Rotorua we had the chance to visit Hobbiton as well. I didn’t do that but only the ride to Hobbiton was really beautiful and you will see why it was filmed in that area! All the people on the bus who went there liked it really much! Because I didn’t do Hobbiton we had more spare time so I went with some people luging. You are going with a luge downhill. You can choose if you are going fast or not. It is really fun when you are going with some people and have a challenge as well. You have different tracks: scenic, intermediate and advanced. The advanced was closed but on the scenic one you have some places where you can stop and look around, the intermediate is a track where you can go down quite fast! Once we done that we had to move on to the hostel!
We had a couple of hours spare time over there so it was nice to have a chill for a bit. In the evening we got picked up for the Tamaki Maori Village. The bus driver told us a little bit about the village and the Maori village! The group needed a chief and one of us volunteered to be the chief. He needed to participate in a ceremony. No one was allowed to smile or move while the ceremony was happening. We got a show
from them what was including a Haka! That was great! After the ceremony we were going into the village and learned some things about the Maori Culture. We learned about the carvings, the Haka, movement and weaponry, artwork and a couple of traditional games. It was a lot of fun and really interesting to watch. Once we did all of the different houses we moved to another part of the village. The place where they cook the dinner. It is a hole in the ground with hot rocks and dirt on top where they cook the dinner in. After we saw the food we had a show with dances and singing. It was really nice to watch. Now it was time for the dinner. It was the traditional meal of the Maori, the Hangi! It was a huge buffet with delicious food. There were potatoes, veggies, chicken, lamb and a couple of side dishes! After everyone had eaten from that buffet, the dessert was coming up and it was also really delicious. You can also book an overnight stay at the Tamaki Maori Village and those who did that had to perform a dance and the guys also needed to show us a Haka. And we also had a performance from all the Maori. The whole night you get a lot of good performances.
Unfortunately it was finished and we needed to go back to the bus heading to the hostel. This was actually quite fun because we were singing songs the whole time in the bus. This was a really good night, definitely worth your money and you have to experience it!
Hot Water Beach to Waitomo Caves
So first of all I will tell you a bit more about the trip that I am doing. It is with Kiwi Experience. You are going on the bus with a lot of other people, so you will meet a lot people! You are on a nice bus and the trips are not taking too long, because you will stop e ccouple of times during the road to get out into the nature! You can travel whole of New Zealand with Kiwi and you can book it with INTERNeX. If you want to book the activities that I am doing, just let us know and we can book it as well for you!
Now we go further on the trip. After a good first day we had to leave at 7.30 am. That was quite early for everyone! We went on the road heading to Waitomo. We stopped in Paeroa and had a coffee and did some groceries. Short after that stop we stopped at Karangahake Gorge Walk. There was a really nice walk where you had to cross 2 bridges first. After the bridge we had to walk up to the old mines. You are really walking on old train tracks that are going in to the mines. It is quite dark in there but
there were some stops where you had an amazing view over the river that is passing the mountain. After a really nice walk we had to go back and then we were going to the Waitomo caves to do Black Water Rafting.
I joined a group with the Black Abbys. After we fit on our gear we were going to the entrance of the cave. We had a few practice rounds abseiling before we were going into the caves. You already guess it, we had to abseil in to the cave. The abseil was 35 meters and you are going down in a really dark space. Once you were down and you looked up you see the glow-worms. When everyone is down you are going to next obstacle, the Zipline! You are taking the zipline without lights and you get across a lot of glow-worms that are lighting your way down. After the zipline we had a nice hot chocolate and a snack to get warm before we go in to the water. We got all a tube and had to jump in the ice cold water! First we got upstream and then we went down the stream with the tube. The guides showed us how the glow-worms are living in the caves. After the tube we needed to get up and float down the river. The current was quite strong. At a moment there was a slide. We all had to get off the slide and then we had hot orange juice and a
piece of chocolate. After the small break we had a choice to get out of the cave on the easy way or climb up the
waterfalls. I chose to climb up the waterfalls. It rained quite a lot the last days so there was a lot of water going down the falls. It was awesome to get up the falls! I really loved this and I really recommend to do this! It was an 5 hour trip so we got back around 8pm in the hostel. We decided with some people to go to the bar that is just a 1 minute walk and it was quite fun to hear the stories about that day from everyone! It was a really fun day!
In the morning we left Auckland with the Kiwi Experience Bus. The bus is fully packed and when you look outside the weather looks really bad. When we were going out of Auckland you see that the nature is going to change very quickly. During the road the bus driver tells a lot about the places that we are passing.
We made a stop in Thames, to do some grocery shopping and the bus driver said we can get some drinks as well for the night because it was allowed to have drink at our accommodation! The weather was getting better and eventually the sun was shining! First we stopped at the accommodation and it was a really nice place to stay.
So we made a stop for like 3 hours at Coromandel. From that spot we had to walk down for 40 minutes to Cathedral Cove. It was a really nice walk with an amazing view over the sea! After the walk we arrived at the beach and Cathedral Cove. It was beautiful and a really nice place to hang out with a group of people. Everyone took a lot of pictures and we played a bit of rugby with some people. We had to go back unfortunately and walked up
the road again. After that we were free to do whatever we wanted and get some food. So I had a good fish and chips and walked down to Hot Water Beach. That place is awesome! You have to dig a hole yourself (or take one that is empty!) and sit down. The water is warm and the sand is on some places too hot to walk on! You can have a drink at the beach and sit as long as you want until the water is raising again. Then walk back to the lodge and finish the day with a drink with the people you did meet during the day.
